IIoT Explained

November 2017

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a term used in the manufacturing sector to describe a “mission critical” version of IoT (the Internet of Things). Like IoT, IIoT involves the connection of physical devices to the Internet - for the purpose of collecting and exchanging data. However, IIoT takes the IoT concept further in terms of data analytics and cyber security.

The ultimate aim of IIoT is to generate information that can be used to improve quality control, plant availability, supply chain traceability and employee safety. To accomplish this, IIoT uses advanced computing technologies like machine learning and big data analytics to interpret the streaming data it collects from IoT-enabled devices. In huge factories, such as car assembly plants, IIoT solutions are capable of monitoring thousands of individual devices involved in the production process.

Like its German counterpart, Industry 4.0, IIoT is the driving force behind the creation of smart factories and computerised manufacturing. In a smart factory, the traditional “run-to-fail” approach is replaced with real-time monitoring, predictive analysis and a continuous improvement process. By becoming more efficient and proactive, manufacturers can reduce costs and increase profitability.

As part of its ongoing commitment to IIoT, Barcode Dynamics is proud to partner with Honeywell - a world-leader in industrial automation, IoT-enabled devices and digital intelligence.
