Procuring a Barcode

If you’ve ever wondered how a business creates or obtains a barcode (you may need one or two yourself), then please read on!

 About Barcodes

The barcode seen on everyday consumer products is called a Universal Product Code (UPC) barcode. UPC barcodes were first put into commercial use on 26th June 1974, when a packet of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum was scanned at a Marsh’s Supermarket in Ohio, USA. Since then, well over 100 million different UPC barcodes have been created and used by retailers, manufacturers and suppliers throughout the world.

Who Creates the Barcodes?

An international not-for-profit organisation called GS1 – once known as the European Article Numbering-Uniform Code Council (EAN-UCC) - is responsible for creating the barcode numbers and maintaining a standards framework in over 100 countries. The aim of GS1 is to create a “common language” which can identify goods in the global supply chain. GS1’s framework ensures that barcodes are unique, accurate and uniform in length. GS1 is jointly headquartered in New Jersey (USA) and Brussels (Belgium).

In Australia, an organisation called GS1 Australia administers the global GS1 system. GS1 Australia is the only official source of GS1 barcodes in Australia. Every GS1 Australia barcode starts with the prefix “93.”

How Do I Obtain a Barcode in Australia?

You simply need to visit the GS1 Australia website (www.gs1au.org) and click on “Get a barcode” in the main menu. You’ll then be asked to join GS1 Australia and complete an on-line application form. Membership is compulsory if you want to obtain barcodes directly from GS1.

Becoming a member of GSI Australia requires payment of a joining fee and an annual licence fee, which is based on your turnover and the number of barcode licenses (GTINs) required.

GS1 Australia encourages applicants to call them on 1300 227 263 with any questions or concerns. If you’re new to obtaining barcodes, it’s advisable to chat directly with GS1 Australia in the first instance.
